🇺🇸 800 area code

800 is one of the seven toll-free codes shared by the whole of North America. It does not point to a city or state — the person or business paying for the line could be anywhere in the US, Canada or the Caribbean. A lookup tells you whether the number is real, who carries it and what kind of line it is.

  • In service since 1966

Is a 800 call a scam?

Most 800 calls are ordinary businesses. But toll-free numbers are also cheap for anyone to rent through a VoIP provider, and caller ID can display a real company's toll-free number while someone else is on the line.

If an 800 caller says they are your bank, a delivery service or a government agency, hang up and call the number printed on your card or the official website instead of the one that called you.

About area code 800

Toll-free numbers are not tied to a location. The business that rents an 800 number pays for incoming calls, which is why banks, airlines and support lines use them — and why callers who want to look established do too. 800 numbers are interchangeable with 888, 877, 866, 855, 844 and 833: the codes were opened one after another as the older ones filled up, not to mark different kinds of business.

800 has been in use since 1966.

Because the code says nothing about where a caller is, the useful questions are different: is the number real and in service, which carrier holds it, and is it a VoIP line that could have been set up minutes ago? That is what a lookup answers.
