仕組み

How a Signal number lookup works

Telecom basics first, public signals second. Empty fields stay empty.

01

Enter the full number

Include the country code exactly as it appeared on your screen — a missing prefix is the most common cause of a wrong result.

02

Review the telecom layer

Validity, country and region, carrier, and whether the line is mobile, landline, or VoIP. This part is free.

03

Check the Signal signal

A full report adds public account signals, including whether the number appears registered on Signal and what that account exposes publicly.

調べられること

What a Signal check can surface

Signal accounts are registered against a phone number, though the platform is deliberately built to expose almost nothing about its users.

Signal signal

  • Registration status only. Signal publishes no profile data, and no honest service can offer more.
  • Account creation date when reported
  • Source-labeled results

Line clues

  • Validity check
  • Carrier name
  • Mobile / landline / VoIP

Region context

  • Country & region
  • Prefix consistency
  • International formats

Other platforms

  • Every source checked, hit or miss
  • Linked accounts where found
  • No invented identities

How Signal treats a phone number

Signal is the hardest platform on this list to learn anything from, and that is deliberate. It is built by an organisation whose explicit goal is that neither strangers nor Signal itself can turn a phone number into information about you.

Registration still needs a number — discovery does not

Signal requires a phone number to create an account. What it has added since is the ability to keep that number private: usernames let someone message you without ever learning it, and a "who can find me by my number" control governs discovery separately from registration.

So on Signal, more than anywhere else, a number search tells you about the owner's configuration rather than their existence.

Contact discovery is designed not to leak

When an app checks which of your contacts also use a service, the naive implementation uploads your address book. Signal does not work that way: its contact discovery is built around short cryptographic hashes and secure enclaves so that the server learns as little as possible about the numbers being checked. Academic work on messenger contact discovery has repeatedly shown that the naive approach leaks at scale, and Signal's design is a direct response to that research.

What this means in practice

  • A number returning nothing on Signal tells you almost nothing. Privacy settings, a username, or simple non-use all look identical from outside.
  • There is no public directory, no profile page and no search engine index to find.
  • Signal users skew privacy-conscious, which means a Signal-only contact is not inherently suspicious — it is often the opposite.

When Signal appears in a scam

The pattern is the same migration seen with Telegram: a contact who insists on moving the conversation to an encrypted app early, before any trust exists. Encryption protects the content of a conversation; it does nothing to establish who is on the other end, and someone pressing hard to move you somewhere unmoderated is doing it for a reason.

Judge the request, not the app. Signal is excellent software used overwhelmingly by ordinary people.

What a phone lookup adds that the app cannot

Platform discovery answers one narrow question: is this number attached to an account here. A reverse phone lookup answers a different one: is this number real, how is it routed, and does anything public connect to it. The second question is often the more useful of the two, because it does not depend on a stranger's privacy settings.

Neither establishes identity. A registered account proves a number was used to sign up, not who is holding the phone.

よくある質問

Signal lookup questions

CatchNumber で分かること・分からないことへの率直な回答。

Can you find out who owns a Signal number?

Not with any guarantee. A check can show whether a number appears registered on Signal and whatever the account exposes publicly. It cannot confirm a legal identity, and no honest service claims otherwise.

Does the person know I checked their Signal number?

No. CatchNumber never notifies the owner of a number that it was searched, and nothing about the check appears on the platform.

The report found no Signal account — what does that mean?

Signal is used by journalists, activists, and privacy-minded people everywhere. Presence on it says nothing negative about anyone.

Is this a background check?

No. CatchNumber is not a consumer reporting agency, and reports must not be used for decisions about employment, credit, housing, tenancy, or insurance.

Can you look someone up on Signal by phone number?

Essentially no. Signal requires a number to register but supports usernames and a control over who can find you by number, and its contact discovery is built on cryptographic hashes specifically so the service learns as little as possible. There is no public directory to search.

Is someone using Signal a red flag?

No — rather the opposite. Signal users skew privacy-conscious and it is widely used by journalists, activists and ordinary people. What matters is whether a new contact is pressing to move you to an unmoderated channel before any trust exists.

Does encryption tell me who I am talking to?

No. End-to-end encryption protects the contents of a conversation from third parties. It establishes nothing at all about the identity of the person at the other end.
