Is a 565 call a scam?
An area code tells you where a number was first assigned, not where the caller is. Mobile numbers keep their area code when people move, and internet (VoIP) numbers can be picked in any area code — so a 565 number can be calling from anywhere.
Robocallers exploit that with "neighbor spoofing": showing a 565 number to people in Georgia because a local-looking call is more likely to be answered. If a 565 call claims to be your bank, the IRS or a delivery company, hang up and call the official number yourself.
About area code 565
565 will enter service on December 6, 2027, as an overlay on 912, which had run short of numbers.
It is part of the 565/912 overlay: the codes cover the same area, and a new line there can be given a number in any of them. Two neighbours — or two phones in one household — can have different area codes. That is also why local calls need the full ten digits.
Because 565 overlays the same ground, the cities listed are those of the codes it shares with.
NANPA lists 565 as running short of numbers, with relief planning under way — expect another overlay code here in the next few years.
Existing numbers will not change. What changes is that new numbers in the area may start with 565, so a call from 565 once it opens can be as local as one from 912.
