849 and the one-ring scam
Because 849 looks like a US area code, it is a favourite of "one-ring" (wangiri) scams: the phone rings once, you call back, and the call is billed as international — sometimes with premium per-minute charges that go to the scammer.
If you do not know anyone in the Dominican Republic, do not call back a missed 849 call. Look the number up first, and ask your carrier to block outgoing international calls if you never make them.
About area code 849
849 entered service on July 1, 2009, as an overlay on 809, which had run short of numbers.
It is part of the 809/829/849 overlay: the codes cover the same area, and a new line there can be given a number in any of them. Two neighbours — or two phones in one household — can have different area codes. That is also why local calls need the full ten digits.
Because 849 overlays the same ground, the cities listed are those of the codes it shares with.
